U.S. District Judge U.W. Clemon will be the featured speaker for The University of Alabama School of Social Work’s annual African-American Heritage Month Program Friday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m., in 223 Little Hall on the UA campus.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has appointed Dr. Lloyd A. “Pete” Morley, professor emeritus of electrical engineering at The University of Alabama, as corporate integrity contact person.
Dr. Robert P. Taylor, professor of mechanical engineering at The University of Alabama, was recently certified by the U.S. Department of Energy as a qualified specialist in process heating assessments.
The University of Alabama’s vision of recruiting the “best and brightest” students is clearly becoming a reality as UA ranks 11th in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars for 2006-2007, and 29th among all universities. The rankings, based on the National Merit Scholarship Corp.’s newly-released 2005-2006 annual report, place UA among the top 8 percent nationally among colleges and universities that enrolled National Merit Scholars.
The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center and the WILL program (Women Involved in Learning and Leading) are sponsoring the National African-American Read-In Monday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in the UA Crossroads Community Center lounge in Ferguson Center.
University of Alabama President Robert E. Witt will speak during a reception honoring UA’s National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic Scholars Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 2-3 p.m. at The Zone in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Author Joy Williams will give a reading Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bama Theatre, 600 Greensboro Ave., as part of The University of Alabama’s Bankhead Visiting Writers Series.
The University of Alabama Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team will play the University of Missouri Men’s Team Friday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. at the UA Student Recreation Center.
The annual celebration of National African-American Heritage Month at The University of Alabama will begin Thursday, Feb. 1 and continue throughout the month with a wide variety of events including film screenings, forums, radio shows, lectures and performances.
Winners of the sixth annual “To Kill a Mockingbird” Essay Contest were honored Friday, Jan. 26, with a luncheon awards ceremony and reception/book signing with noted author Harper Lee at The University of Alabama.
