TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s department of special education and multiple abilities is seeking practicing general education elementary education teachers to enroll in a new graduate training program to receive special education certification while still teaching full time.
Project TEEACH, which stands for Transforming Elementary Educators into Advocates, Change Agents and Highly Qualified Special Educators, is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, and is designed to increase the number of highly qualified, dually certified special educators in 26 school districts across West Alabama.
Twenty-eight practicing general elementary educators will be selected to take part in this new graduate training program in special education. These participants will receive full tuition scholarships, $200 textbook stipends each semester, and travel stipends to attend and present at the annual Alabama Federation for Exceptional Children conference.
Over a four-year period, TEEACH scholars will continue to teach in public schools while earning Alabama Collaborative Teacher Program (CTP, K-6) special education certification and a master’s degree. Participants will gain knowledge in state of the art differentiated instruction methods, receive continuous mentoring from award winning faculty, and participate in extensive closely supervised field experiences using cutting edge technology.
A completed application must be secured before an applicant can be considered for selection as a Project TEEACH scholar. Also, the application procedures require applicants to take the MAT or the GRE tests for graduate school admission. Those interested can apply online by visiting the Project TEEACH website at http://www.projectteeach.ua.edu.
