TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center in conjunction with the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Panhellenic Association, Intrafraternity Council, women’s studies department and the interactive drama group Unscripted will sponsor a candlelight vigil at Denny Chimes on Wednesday, Oct.11 at 6:30 p.m.
Attendants will light candles to remember victims and pledge to fight dating and domestic violence. “Everyone can play a role in calling for the social change necessary to stop the violence,” says Elle Shaaban-Magaña, WRC assistant director.
Domestic violence is a serious crime that affects people of all backgrounds. Every 9 seconds, a woman is beaten and each year, approximately 3.3 million children witness violence by family members against their mother or female caretaker. Forty percent of teenage girls report knowing someone their age that has been hit by a boyfriend.
“These are shocking statistics, which call for all students at the University to take a stand against dating violence,” said Magaña. All members of the UA and Tuscaloosa communities are encouraged to attend.
The WRC provides numerous services to aid those who are victims and to support those who are family members of victims.
