TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Shermeen Bashir Memon of Tuscaloosa, a University of Alabama May graduate, has been awarded a top fellowship from Alpha Lambda Delta national academic honor society for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Memon will receive the Maria Leonard Fellowship with a $7,500 stipend from Alpha Lambda Delta.
One of UA’s most honored May graduates, Memon received a degree in biology with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She will be attending the UA School of Medicine and is the third of three children in her family to be a top student in their graduating class and to pursue a career in medicine.
Her scientific research in the areas of gene therapy, ionic liquids research and the effects of certain soil-borne bacteria on Parkinson’s disease brought her scholarly notice and the Undergraduate Research Award.
Memon received one of 23 fellowships awarded annually by Alpha Lambda Delta to members for graduate study. Each fellowship is named for a person of significance to the honorary; one carries a $7,500 stipend, eight carry a $5,000 stipend and the other 14 receive a $3,000 stipend. The fellowship Memon received is named for the late Maria Leonard, dean of women at the University of Illinois and founder of Alpha Lambda Delta.
Memon competed with more than 90 applicants from the society’s 251 chapters for the award; applicants were judged by a committee of Alpha Lambda Delta National Council members.
