Addy Named Director of UA’s Center for Business and Economic Research

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Samuel N. Addy has been named director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at The University of Alabama.

Addy’s appointment was announced by Dr. Michael Hardin, incoming associate dean for research and technology at UA’s Culverhouse College of Commerce.

Addy’s promotion, as well as Hardin’s, follows the retirement announcement by Dr. Carl Ferguson, associate dean for research and technology, professor of marketing, and director of the CBER, part of the Culverhouse College of Commerce. Ferguson’s retirement is effective the end of the year.

“Carl Ferguson wore a lot of hats and wore them well,” said Dr. J. Barry Mason, dean of the business school. “The growth of the state’s economy and the increasing need for research dollars and technological advancement make this an opportune time to look at ways to leverage the abilities of talented people such as Dr. Addy and Dr. Hardin.”

Addy currently serves as associate director and associate research economist of the Center for Business and Economic Research and is a frequent spokesman for the center on economic issues. He served as interim director of CBER from August 1998 to May 1999 and was named associate director when Ferguson became associate dean and director in June 1999. He has conducted and led several funded economic studies around the state as well as federally-funded projects.

Addy received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana, his Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota and his doctorate from The Pennsylvania State University.
