TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama department of communicative disorders will hold an open house Thursday, May 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. to commemorate its first anniversary at its current location at 700 University Blvd., East, the old Capstone Medical Center building.
The department previously was housed in Rowand-Johnson Hall. “We have tripled our space,” said Dr. Karen Steckol, professor and chair of the department of communicative disorders. “The building is much more accessible. To say the least, we are very happy in our new home. This open house is to show thanks to the many people who have worked hard during the past year to make our new facility possible.”
The open house will include a tour of the facilities and an opportunity to meet the staff. Refreshments will be served.
May is Better Speech and Hearing Month. Steckol said rises in both autism and hearing loss, due to the aging population and the increased use of iPod-like devices, are driving the increased importance for the Speech and Hearing Center housed in the department.
The department of communicative disorders provides speech, language and hearing services to children and adults in the West Alabama area. Services in the Speech and Hearing Center are provided year-round by experienced, licensed and nationally certified speech-language pathologists and audiologists who direct and supervise students in diagnostic and rehabilitative procedures.
