TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Melanie Walthall Chambliss of Prattville has been named president-elect of The University of Alabama National Alumni Association for 2006-2007.

Chambliss, now a retired school teacher and counselor, graduated in 1968 from the University with a master’s degree. Since that time, she has been highly involved in the UA Alumni Association, serving as president and member of the scholarship and recruitment committee of the Prattville Chapter.

Chambliss is also a member of the University Autauga County Heritage Association, Prattville Chamber of Commerce, Yaupon Garden Club and First Baptist Church. She enjoys travel and visiting her five grandchildren.

As president-elect, Chambliss hopes to motivate young and old alumni to participate in their local chapters. “Young graduates must be enticed to join and be active so the local organizations will grow and continue to be a liaison between the towns and cities in Alabama and across the nation with the University of Alabama,” Chambliss said.

The UA National Alumni Association is divided into 16 districts within Alabama and six regions outside the state. Each is represented by a vice president who serves on the NAA Executive Committee and makes decisions concerning the organization and funding of a variety of programs and events to benefit alumni, students and the University. The National Alumni Association supports UA through the combined efforts of its volunteer leadership, the alumni staff and more than 29,000 active members.
