UA Women’s Studies Colloquim to Be Thursday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Ashley Oates, an adjunct faculty member in the department of art and an instructor for the Blount Undergraduate Initiative at The University of Alabama, will give a lecture titled “Exploring the Role of the Female Body through Contemporary Art” Thursday, April 6 at 4 p.m., ten Hoor room 30.

The lecture will include a brief overview of women in the arts with an emphasis on contemporary artists – male and female – who continue to explore the female body as their primary source of imagery.

This lecture will explore issues such as what constitutes “feminist art,” if art possesses the power to change deeply held gender biases, and why some feminist artists are criticized for reinforcing negative stereotypes while others are praised for their clever take on traditional female roles.
