TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Harmonies of Liberty Society is pleased to announce that Bill Pryor of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals and Sue Bell Cobb of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals will give the keynote addresses at “The Harmonies of Liberty: A Symposium on the Role of Religion in Public Life” on Friday, March 31 at The University of Alabama School of Law.
The symposium will begin at 9 a.m. in the Moot Court Room (room 140) in the Law School. Check-in will start at 8 a.m. Judge Pryor’s speech will begin the symposium at 9:15 a.m. and Judge Cobb’s speech will close the day’s events at 4 p.m.
The symposium will explore the proper role of faith in the public arena.
“Much of the debate over the appropriate place of religion and public life takes place within the context of legal interpretation,” noted David Averyt, a third-year law student and co-chair of the symposium. “We’re excited that the thoughtful judicial perspectives of Judge Pryor and Judge Cobb will frame the day’s discussions in such a way as to recognize this fact.”
The Harmonies of Liberty Society is a nonpartisan, ideologically diverse group of law students who are concerned about the effects of partisan rhetoric on meaningful public debate. Citizen and media participation is crucial to the success of the symposium’s mission to encourage civil discourse about the place of religion in politics and policy.
