UA Modern Languages and Classics Presents ‘Turning Points in European Affairs’ Lecture

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama department of modern languages and classics and the College of Arts and Sciences are presenting guest speaker Evlyn Gould, professor of French at the University of Oregon, who will discuss “Turning Points in European Affairs: From Dreyfus to the Head Scarf Incident,” Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. in 109 BB Comer Hall.

Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.

Gould has published articles on 19th century literature, culture and the performing arts in journals such as French Forum, Performing Arts Journal, Romance Languages Annual, Dalhousie French Studies, Discourse and Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism. She is the author of “Virtual Theater from Diderot to Mallarmé” and “The Fate of Carmen.” Her third book, “Engaging Europe: Rethinking a Changing Continent,” was released in May. Her work in progress includes a monograph, “Turning Around Dreyfus,” a study of curricular reform and the “Jewish question” during the French Third Republic.
