UA Book Gift Includes Rare First Edition of Twain’s ‘Huckleberry Finn’ and Slave Narrative from 1800s

A significant gift of rare 19th century American books to The University of Alabama Libraries may be able to help turn back the hands of time, so to speak. Similar works were destroyed on campus when the Rotunda — UA’s original library — was burned during the Civil War. This historical fact motivated the owner of the book collection to donate it to the University.

Arty Party at UA President’s Mansion to Benefit Arts Programs

The Arty Party, a lively spring evening of dinner and theatre at The University of Alabama, will be held Saturday, April 24 at 5 p.m. at the President’s Mansion on the UA campus. A “big top” tent (on the President’s Mansion lawn) decorated with scenes from UA theatre productions will set the stage for the event which will raise funds for theatre scholarships and celebrate the Capstone’s fine and performing arts programs.

UA Professor Awarded Fulbright, Headed to Colombia for Research on Presidential Book

The University of Alabama’s Dr. Harvey Kline is headed to Colombia, courtesy of the U.S. Fulbright Scholars Program, where he will teach a class and conduct research for an upcoming book on that strife-filled country’s president.

University of Alabama student journalists had the most first place winners and won the Sweepstakes Award in the Mark of Excellence (MOE) Competition held on Saturday, March 27, at the Society of Professional Journalists Region 3 Convention in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

UA Faculty Member Hosts Virtual Colloquium

The University of Alabama’s Dr. Tom Ward, a senior research fellow in the Center for Creative Media and executive officer of the Cognitive Science Society, will act as host for a virtual colloquium on Friday, April 9 at 1 p.m. E.S.T. The speaker will be Professor Andy Clark, director of the Cognitive Science Program at Indiana University, who will talk about the “extended mind” and how human created devices are leading to new forms of cognition and new ways of thinking about the mind.

UA Hoole Special Collections Library to Host Thesis Exhibit Hitopadesha

The W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library at The University of Alabama will host Susan Wyssen’s thesis exhibition and reception, including a selection of letterpress and binding work featuring her edition of the “Hitopadesha,” on Wednesday, April 14, in the Hoole Library on the 2nd floor of Mary Harmon Bryant Hall, 500 Hackberry Lane.

UA Guest Lecturer to Discuss Economic Future of Europe

Dr. Jean-Pierre Paelinck, secretary general of the European Investment Services Association, former secretary general of the Federation of European Stock Exchanges and a member of the International Advisory Board of The University of Alabama Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, will give a public lecture on “Whither Europe: Prospects for the EU in the 21st Century,” on Monday, April 12, in the Forum Room of the Ferguson Center on campus from 4-5:30 p.m.

After-School Tutoring Program Students to Display Art at UA Law School Wednesday

The Public Interest Institute of The University of Alabama School of Law has included art tutoring by law students as part of its after-school tutoring program. About 75 children at five Tuscaloosa Housing Developments have benefited from the program, which is in addition to the regular tutoring program.

UA Environmental Health and Safety to Hold Outreach Meetings
