UA Women’s Resource Center to Hold ‘Take Back the Night Rally’ April 7

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — On Wednesday, April 7, the Women’s Resource Center, (WRC) at The University of Alabama will sponsor its annual “Take Back the Night” march at 7 p.m. to support the end of violence against women.

The rally will begin on campus at the Ferguson Center Plaza, then around the Quad, concluding with a candlelight moment of silence and a live musical performance back at the Ferguson Plaza.

Take Back the Night is an international rally and march that is organized with the purpose of unifying local communities to take a stand against violence against women. The University has participated in this event since 1986. Take Back the Night was initially sponsored by the UA department of Women’s Studies, but for the past four years it has been organized by the UA Women’s Resource Center.

Along with the rally, the WRC is passing out teal ribbons, which represent support for Sexual Assault Awareness throughout April.

The WRC will hold Voices and Violence, an open microphone forum to explore violence in the lives of women on Thursday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the Bad Ass Coffee Company on University Blvd. The University and Tuscaloosa communities are invited to be a part of the events throughout Sexual Assault Awareness month to raise awareness and serve as a collective voice to end the violence against women.

The Women’s Resource Center is pleased to have support from organizations and departments on campus including Students for Gender Justice, Women’s Studies, Queer Straight Alliance, NAACP, African-American Association, School of Social Work, and First Christian Church.
