UA Department of Theatre Presents Thought Provoking ‘Three Days of Rain’

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.–The University of Alabama department of theatre and dance presents the Pulitzer Prize nominated play, “Three Days of Rain,” March 16-20 at 7:30 p.m. and March 21 at 2 p.m. in the Allen Bales Theatre, located in Rowand-Johnson Hall on the UA campus.

“Three Days of Rain,” by Richard Greenberg, was a runner-up for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize. It is a cleverly constructed exploration of how the personalities and life choices of parents affect their children; so much so, that they are often reflections of one another. Serious issues of family secrets and legacies are intertwined with humor and irony.

In “Three Days of Rain,” we meet a world-famous architect’s children Walker and Nan, and his partner’s child Pip, when they gather after the architect’s death. The play is a prism, which constantly presents new angles through which the audience can examine its characters, as it winds back from 1995 to 1960, so that the audience can begin to understand what the children will never know.

In Act One, Walker struggles to unlock the mysteries of his father’s life. In the abandoned New York apartment where his father once lived and worked, Walker finds his father’s journal full of puzzling sporadic entries. The first reads simply ‘Three days of rain.’ Although Walker sees this as a ‘weather report,’ the audience finds out in Act Two that this entry has much more meaning than the children could ever realize. During this act we see part of those three days with the actors now portraying the parents.

“Three Days of Rain,” with its witty dialogue and thought provoking plots, has received rave reviews across the country. Directed by MFA student Steven Ray, who has returned to Tuscaloosa after working for several years as an actor, writer and director for companies around the U.S. and Australia, this performance is sure to receive the same.

Performances will be Tuesday, March 16, through Saturday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 21, at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Theatre and Dance box office at 205/348-3400 or may be purchased at the door.
