TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center (WRC) will be offering a number of free events this month including brown bag lunches, seminars, group sessions, book discussions and self defense courses.
They include:
- Friday, Feb. 13, Come bring a brown bag lunch and enjoy as guest speaker Dr. Lisa LeCount, discusses her research “Like Water for Chocolate: Feasting and Political Ritual Among the Late Classic Maya of Xunantunich, Belize,” at noon in the Ferguson Forum.
- Tuesday, Feb.10, Everywoman Book Club will be discussing “Lakota Woman,” a book by Mary Crow Dog at 6 p.m. in the Frances S. Summersell Library of the WRC.
- Protect yourself with help from the Sexual Harassment, Assault and Rape Prevention training (SHARP). This is a self defense class that will be offered to all female students, faculty, staff and the community. The class is free and will offer a combination of basic physical self-defense training along with discussions of psychological risk reduction strategies. The class is limited to 40 people and moderate physical exercise is involved, so wear comfortable clothing. Participants can attend three sessions on Feb. 24, March 2, and March 9, from 6-9 p.m. or two sessions on April 20-21 from 12:30-5 pm. Participants must attend all sessions to receive their certificate of training.
- Thursday, Feb. 26, “Faces in the Mirror: Exploring the Woman Within,” is a five week group open to all females that will discuss a number of issues including body image, assertiveness, stereotypes, and ways to combat stress. The group will meet every Thursday from 4-5:30 p.m. in the WRC.
- Women’s Empowerment Conference is set for March 19-20. This weekend conference will include networking opportunities, motivational speakers, and workshops on personal and professional empowerment of women. The conference begins on Friday with a dinner and keynote speaker and will continue all day on Saturday. The event is open to 50 undergraduate and graduate female students who are selected to participate. Current or prior leadership is not required and applications are due no later than Feb. 23. The selected students will be notified March 1. Applications are available online at http://wrc.ua.edu.
