Wilkinson Named 2003 UA Homecoming Queen

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Maury Wilkinson of Clinton, Miss., was named homecoming queen for 2003 at The University of Alabama. Her selection was announced at UA’s homecoming pep rally on Friday, Oct. 10.

Wilkinson is a senior at UA majoring in nursing. She is president of the Alabama Triangle Association, University Honors Program Ambassadors’ vice president, vice president of administration for Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, secretary of the Anderson Society and a member of XXXI.

The queen will be crowned during halftime of the homecoming football game between Alabama and Southern Mississippi on Saturday, Oct. 11, in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The other four members of the 2003 homecoming court are:

  • Elizabeth Dees, a senior from Daphne majoring in English in the Blount Undergraduate Initiative Program
  • Angela Johnson, a senior from Birmingham (zip code 35242) majoring in marketing
  • LaShondra Jones, a senior from Birmingham (zip code 35207) majoring in international finance, and
  • Amy Ridgeway, a senior from Huxford majoring in elementary education.

UA students selected the queen and her court from 17 candidates in a general campus election held Oct. 7-8.

The second annual Homecoming Bowling Tournament was held on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Winners included: 1st place – Honors Program Student Association, 2nd place – Lambda Chi Alpha, and 3rd place – Burke Hall.

The Homecoming Choreography Contest took place on Thursday, Oct. 9. Winners included: 1st place – Delta Zeta and Phi Mu (tie), 3rd place – Alpha Chi Omega and Zeta Tau Alpha (tie), best costume – Alpha Delta Pi, and most enthusiasm – Delta Zeta.

The banner competition winners were announced on Thursday. The winners included: 1st place – Delta Zeta, 2nd place – Alabama Yell Crew, and 3rd place – Women’s Honors Residential Program.

Winners in several of UA’s annual homecoming events also included:

Residence Hall Decoration Competition winners: 1st place – Rose Towers (11th Floor), 2nd place – Parham Hall, and 3rd place – Somerville Hall.

Lawn decorations winners for this year included: Independent Groups: 1st place — Wesley Foundation, 2nd place – Alabama Student Society for Communication Arts (ASSCA), 3rd place – Baptist Campus Ministries. Greek Organizations: 1st place – Zeta Tau Alpha, 2nd place (tie) Delta Zeta, Alpha Delta Pi, 3rd place – Pi Beta Phi.

Quad Games winners included: 1st place – Gamma Phi Beta, 2nd place – Zeta Tau Alpha, 3rd place – Kappa Alpha Theta, Spirit Award – Phi Mu.

Paint the Town Red contest winners included: 1st place – Honors Program Student Association, 2nd place – Delta Zeta, 3rd place – Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Winners from the Homecoming parade were: 1st place – Capstone College of Nursing, 2nd place – Alpha Delta Pi, and 3rd place – Delta Zeta and Phi Mu (tie).

The Homecoming Spirit Cup, given to the organization that exhibited the most spirit during the week’s activities, was awarded to Delta Zeta for the second year in a row.
