UA College of Engineering Alumnus Named President of Military Academy

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Chester Carroll, University of Alabama College of Engineering graduate and emeritus faculty member, has been appointed president of Lyman Ward Military Academy in Camp Hill, Ala.

Carroll took over the position as president in July, after serving on the Academy’s Board of Trustees since January. After serving in the U.S. Army, he received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from UA in 1961, 1962 and 1965, respectively.

He was named a Distinguished Engineering Fellow in 1988 at UA, where he is an E.A. Larry Drummond Eminent Scholar Chair Emeritus in computer architecture. Carroll also served in various positions at Auburn University from 1965 to 1986, including vice president for research, dean of engineering, chairman and professor of electrical engineering. He has numerous U.S. patents and has received awards for outstanding research and teaching.

LWMA is a boy’s military boarding school that has provided students from around the world with a military prep school experience and education since 1898. The Academy is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

In 1837, UA became the first university in the state to offer engineering classes and was one of the first five in the nation to do so. Today, the College of Engineering, with about 1,900 students and more than 90 faculty, is one of the three oldest continuously operating engineering programs in the country and has been fully accredited since accreditation standards were implemented in the 1930s.
