Expert on Privacy and the Law to Speak at UA School of Law

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Anita Allen-Castellitto, a nationally known expert on the law and ethics of privacy, will present the Daniel J. Meador Lecture at The University of Alabama School of Law on Tuesday, Feb. 4. She will discuss “Why Privacy Isn’t Everything” at 1 p.m. in the Moot Courtroom. The lecture is open to the public.

Allen-Castellitto is a professor of law and philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. Previously, she served as associate dean of Georgetown University Law Center. She has also taught at Carnegie-Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and, in 2001-02, was a visiting professor at Yale Law School. After earning her law degree from Harvard University, Allen-Castellitto practiced law privately before turning to an academic career.

Allen-Castellitto has written more than 70 articles and several books, including “Accountability for Private Life” (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Inc., April 2003), “Privacy Law” (with R. Turkington, 2nd edition, West, 2002), and “Uneasy Access: Privacy for Women in a Free Society” (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Inc., 1988). She is also recognized for her scholarship in the areas of jurisprudence, legal philosophy, law and literature, women’s rights, and race relations. She has lectured at major colleges and universities in the U.S. and Europe. Allen-Castellitto has appeared on “Nightline,” “Good Morning America,” “60 Minutes,” “Face the Nation,” and other television and radio programs.

The Meador Lecture was established in 1994 to honor the former UA professor and law dean Daniel J. Meador. A member of the Alabama law class of 1951 and professor emeritus at the University of Virginia School of Law, Professor Meador delivered the inaugural lecture in the series. Other Meador lecturers include Robert Gordon, Yale Law School; Frank I. Michelman, Harvard Law School; Paul Carrington, Duke University Law School; Professor Lea Brilmayer, Yale Law School; Saul Levmore, University of Chicago Law School; Akhil Reed Amar, Yale Law School; and Peter L.
