UA Corolla Wins National Honors at College Media Convention

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama yearbook, the Corolla, won four national awards at the College Media Convention held Oct. 30-Nov. 3 in Kissimmee, Fla.

The 2002 Corolla won second place in its Best of Show category, and the 2001 Corolla won three first-place honors in the Best of Collegiate Design competition sponsored by College Media Advisers. One of the first-place wins was among all publications, not just yearbooks.

These design awards were First Place, Headline Presentation (all publications) designed by Donnie Smith; First Place, Student Life Spread (yearbooks) designed by Donnie Smith; and First Place, Academics Spread (yearbooks) designed by Donnie Smith and Noelle Dolbare.

Dolbare was editor-in-chief of the 2001 Corolla and Smith was editor-in-chief of the 2002 volume. Paul Isom, UA director of student media, advised the 2001 Corolla and he and Andy Duncan, UA assistant director of student media, both advised the 2002 volume.

Judges for the design competition included staff members from the Chicago Tribune, Esquire, National Geographic and Wired magazines. Nine UA students were among 2,500 students from across the nation who attended the convention. Sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Advisers, it is the world’s largest annual meeting for college student journalists and their advisers.
