TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will host a tribute to honor UA student Andree Pickens and the UA Women’s Gymnastics Team for their achievements throughout the year.
The ceremony will be held in the Ferguson Center Theater on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m.
This year’s Woman of the Year for the state of Alabama, 2002 SEC Athlete of the Year, two-time NCAA champion, 14-time All American, Pickens lead the UA Women’s Gymnastics Team to the national championship in April.
The senior in the College of Arts and Sciences was also recently placed among the top 10 collegiate athletes in the country.
The event will allow organizations in which Pickens has been actively involved to pay tribute to her and to the team.
Dave Washington Jr., coordinator of the event, said the UA NAACP chapter honors all members who have made some special achievement, but Andree’s case was different. He said “since so many organizations have honors and awards for her, we decided to have one big ceremony where the NAACP is host.”
“Students and student organizations are paying tribute to Andree. Some government officials are making contributions as well.”
A reception for the athletes will follow. Sunday dress and attire is required. The public is invited to attend. Some reserved seating is available.
