UA to Co-Host Governor’s Safety and Health Conference

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s College of Continuing Studies’ Division of Environmental and Industrial Programs, in coordination with the Alabama Governor’s office, will host the Alabama Governor’s Safety and Health Conference Aug. 26-28 at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach.

John Barnhart, commissioner, Alabama Department of Labor, will open the conference with welcoming comments. Headlining the Monday morning event will be John Henshaw, assistant secretary of labor, U.S. DOL; followed by Pat Tyson, Constangy, Brooks & Smith; and Scott Geller, Safety Performance Solutions.

The Wednesday closing session speakers will be Joseph Mancusi, a highly acclaimed health and safety speaker. Hallerin Hilton Hill, a radio talk show host, motivational speaker and author, will open the Wednesday morning general session.

In addition to the general speakers, breakout sessions, covering occupational safety, health and environmental topics, will be offered.

Those sessions include: Protecting Building Environments from Airborne Chemical, Biological, or Radiological Attacks; Anthrax Response — Are You Ready for Bio-Terrorism?; New Steel Erection Standard; Preparation Against the Threat of Terrorism; The Effects of Aggression in the Workplace and How to Prevent It; and OSHA Injury and Illness Recordkeeping.

Dr. William Weems, director for UA’s division of environmental and industrial programs, said the conference’s goal is to promote occupational safety and health in Alabama. This conference is the largest of its type in Alabama and the Gulf Coast region.

Continuing education units are available for those in the following organizations: Alabama Board of Nursing (in process), Alabama State Nursing Association (provider # 5-68.0), Board of Certified Safety Professionals, and pending approval from American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
