UA Library to Sponsor Film Viewing at Bama Theatre Oct. 11-16

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library will sponsor the 1956 film “The Bad Seed” at the Bama Theatre, Oct. 11-16.

“The Bad Seed,” a story of the notion of “inherited evil” and the American family, was written by Mobile native William March (né William Edward Campbell.). The papers of William March are housed at the Hoole Library and include original manuscripts for many of his works, photographs, memorabilia and source material for his writing.

There will be a reception and a lecture on opening night, Thursday, Oct. 11, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., in the Greensboro Room of the Bama Theatre. After the reception, Dr. Phillip Beidler of the UA department of English will present a lecture on William March and his contributions to American literature. The screening of the film will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Beidler has written extensively about the American military in literature, Alabama authors and about the literature of Alabama and the American South.

Beidler wrote the introduction to the 1989 edition of “Company K” by William March, published by the UA Press. March, a decorated World War I veteran, was indeed shaped by his military experience, and it is reflected in his writing.

The Bama Theatre is located at 600 Greensboro Ave. in Tuscaloosa; tickets are $5.

In conjunction with this event, the Hoole Library will also feature a William March exhibition. Materials will be featured from the William March (Campbell) Papers, as well as published works by William March from the Wade Hall Collection of Southern History and Culture and the Hoole Alabama Collection. This exhibition is curated by Jessica Lacher-Feldman, public and outreach services coordinator for the Hoole Library, and Lisa Reams, graduate assistant from the School of Library and Information Services.

In addition, a collection of American Patriotic Sheet Music from the World War I Era from the Wade Hall Collection of Southern History and Culture will be exhibited. This exhibit is curated by Jessica Lacher-Feldman of the Hoole Library, and Daniel Goldmark, musicology professor from the UA School of Music.

Both exhibitions will be housed in the Hoole Library, located on the second floor of Mary Harmon Bryant Hall. Bryant Hall can be found at 500 Hackberry Lane on the UA campus. The exhibitions will be available from Oct. 11 – Dec. 21.

The Hoole Special Collections Library is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Thursday evening until 9 p.m.
