Disabilities Advocacy Program Celebrates Anniversary with Summit

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program will host a Disability Summit to celebrate its 25 years of service. The event is scheduled for August 3 at The University of Alabama Ferguson Center.

The summit will include two morning sessions covering topics such as special education, Alabama’s Olmstead Plan, the Alabamians with Disabilities Act and ADA issues, Medicaid, and the voting process for people with disabilities. A reception will follow in the afternoon.

The registration deadline for the event, which is free and open to the public, is July 23. To register or for more information, contact Ann Marshall at ADAP@law.ua.edu or 1-800-826-1675.

The Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program, known as ADAP, is a federally mandated, statewide protection and advocacy program. It has served to protect, promote, and expand the rights of people with disabilities by providing legally based advocacy services since its inception in 1976.

To enhance its ability to meet these needs, ADAP is also part of the Clinical Law Program at The University of Alabama School of Law. Students interested in practicing disability law work alongside ADAP staff members to provide advocacy services.

“ADAP’s Disability Summit is a full-day event to celebrate our 25 years of service,” said Reuben Cook, director of the ADAP Clinical Law Program. “It’s a celebration of ADAP plus an opportunity to learn and voice your concerns and opinions.”
