TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Lorenzo Thomas, African American poet and critic, will read portions of his creative work on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m., in the Morgan Hall auditorium on the University of Alabama campus as part of the Bankhead Visiting Writers Series. The event is free and open to the public.
UA’s African American Studies department, in conjunction with the Bankhead Visiting Writers Series, will sponsor Thomas’ reading.
Thomas’ collection of poetry includes “Chances are Few,” “The Bathers,” and “Sound Science.” A new book of criticism, “Extraordinary Measures: Afrocentric Modernism and 20th Century American Poetry,” was published by The University of Alabama Press in August of this year.
Thomas was a member of the legendary Umbra workshop in the 1960s and is currently a professor of English at the University of Houston-Downtown. He is also the recipient of two Poets Foundation Awards and the Lucille Medwick Prize.
The Bankhead Visiting Writers Series is made possible by an endowment from the Bankhead Foundation, UA’s creative writing program, the department of English and the College of Arts and Sciences.
