UA Arboretum Hosts Gardening Speaker From Southern Living Magazine

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Friends of The University of Alabama Arboretum will host Linda Askey, garden editor of Southern Living magazine, who will discuss “Women’s Gardens, Women’s Lives — The Garden as Metaphor,” March 2 at 7 p.m. at the Potager on Main Avenue in Northport.

Askey will speak on the “gardening life” as she reflects on her interviews with women gardeners during her tenure at Southern Living.

Askey holds a bachelor of science degree in horticulture from Clemson University and a master’s degree from North Carolina State University. Askey has served as garden editor of Southern Living since 1995 where she lead the garden department staff to several Quill & Trowel Awards for outstanding garden writing. She joined Southern Living in 1979 as assistant garden editor and held a variety of positions on the garden staff until 1991 when she joined Southern Accents as garden editor. She served as editor of the Southern Living Garden Guide in addition to her other duties.

Other upcoming events hosted by the Friends of the UA Arboretum include:

–April 9, Friends of the Arboretum Annual Spring Plant Sale.

New, unusual and heirloom varieties of herbs, vegetables, annuals and perennials for the garden, the patio and the window sill will be for sale at the Arboretum. The sale for members will be 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The sale will be open to the public from 1-4 p.m. Community members may join the organization for $25 on the day of the sale.

–May 4, 7 p.m., “Discovering Your Gardening Personality.”

Jennifer Greer, author of “The Alabama Gardeners Almanac,” will take a humorous look at the way a garden reflects the personality of its gardener. The lecture will be at the Potager.

–June 4, 1-5 p.m., “Garden Celebrations.”
