Expertise
I am a scholar of 19th and 20th century African American literature who researches how African American writers experience, write about, and imagine disability. I am a proud Tuscaloosa native and Alabama graduate who has published 1 book, 7 peer-reviewed articles, presented at over 20 international and national conferences, while receiving 6 grants and fellowships. My first book, Stumbling Blocks and Other Unfinished Work, expands and contextualizes the unpublished works of the late, disabled, writer Delores Phillips.
I also have extensive digital humanities experience. For example, in collaboration with the University of Georgia Press, I created an accessible digital archive and pedagogical tool for Stumbling Blocks. Furthermore, I have taught and edited for Wikipedia, which includes a scaffolded project that integrates traditional academic research with 21st century digital literacy. Since 2023, my students have created and edited 54 articles, contributing over 85,000 words.
