University of Alabama colleges collaborate to put shoe on the other foot

An unlikely collaboration between two University of Alabama colleges has resulted in an innovative, yet fashionable, way of displaying student work. The SHOE PRO-JECT started with one goal – expanding the College of Engineering’s 3-D projection lab’s scope by providing students a “screen” on which they could showcase skills, said Genna Jones, events coordinator for the College of Human Environmental Sciences (CHES).
 
Tapping on the Mound honors top UA students, faculty

Hundreds of students and their families gathered Friday afternoon on the University of Alabama Quad for the joint induction ceremony of the school’s most prestigious honor societies. During the annual Tapping on the Mound, representatives from the Anderson Society, the Mortar Board, the Blue Key Honor Society and the Iota Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa recognized UA’s top students for their academic excellence, extracurricular activities and more.

The Renew Our Rivers Black Warrior River cleanup along the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk is Monday, April 10. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes and report at 3 p.m. at The Park at Manderson Landing. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. The cleanup will end at 7 p.m. This cleanup is coordinated by the University of Alabama Student Government Association, Local Roots and Alabama Power. Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Ten-year-old leukemia patient joins UA soccer squad

The University of Alabama women’s soccer team gained a special new member Friday afternoon as 10-year-old Kylie Hosey signed with the Crimson Tide. Kylie, who has been diagnosed with leukemia, joined coach Wes Hart’s team with the help of Team IMPACT, an organization that pairs sick children with local collegiate athletic teams. “Anyway we can impact a person’s life, we certainly want to do so. I know this means a lot to her and it means a lot to us,” Hart said. “Kylie’s got a huge heart and a lot of fight in her, and I know she’s going to be a perfect fit for our team.”

UA program to be renamed for longtime director

The University of Alabama’s computer-based honors program is being renamed for its longtime director who was formerly a student in its inaugural class. The Catherine J. Randall Research Scholars Program is set to launch in 2018. Randall earned her bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees and two doctoral degrees from UA, and she has served in several capacities throughout her career, including 25 years as director of the Computer-Based Honors Program.

Anyone who lives in Oklahoma knows the risk associated with severe storms. Time and time again, we’ve seen tornadoes tear through the state, ripping apart homes, businesses and even lives. While we can’t do anything to stop the storms from coming, we can be better prepared for when they do … In Oklahoma, building a FORTIFIED home will add about 2 percent to the cost of the new home. There’s a chance to make that money back when you sell the home. A study by the University of Alabama shows the resale value of a FORTIFIED home increased by nearly 7 percent, but I think Oklahomans should see the financial benefit of resilient construction long before that.

Black women question their absence in media

Halle Berry was the first — and only — black woman to win lead actress at the Oscars. She took the stage to accept the award for her role in “Monster’s Ball” in 2002 — almost 40 years after Sidney Poitier became the first black man to take the lead actor statue in 1964 — visibly overcome with emotion, thanking her forebears at the top of her speech … Panelists included actresses Carroll (“Dynasty”), Tonya Pinkins (“All My Children”) and Lisa Gay Hamilton (“The Practice”), casting director Twinkie Byrd, culture critic April Reign (who started the “OscarsSoWhite” campaign last year), professor Kristen Warner of the University of Alabama, with Kimberle Crenshaw, a law professor at Columbia University and UCLA, serving as moderator.

3 municipal clerks complete educational requirement training

Three municipal clerks from St. Clair County recently completed educational requirement training. The group included Ragland clerk Penny Owens, who completed all of the educational requirements of the University of Alabama Master Municipal Clerk Academy; and Moody clerk Tracy Patterson and Riverside clerk Candace Smith, who both completed the educational requirements of the University of Alabama Certification Municipal Clerk Academy.

Area residents named to dean’s, president’s lists at University of Alabama

Free legal help for Veterans

That article was inspired by the 75 anniversary of Tuscaloosa’s Moundville Archaeological Park. UA Panhellenic Association holds Easter Egg Hunt

Easter festivities began today on The University of Alabama campus. It was held at the President’s Mansion. Children from Tuscaloosa hunted for more than 30,000 candy filled eggs. There was also face painting and pictures with the Easter bunny.

UA Wheelchair Tennis Team to defend their national title

The University of Alabama’s Wheelchair Tennis Team is gearing up for a big weekend. They are looking to defend their national title during matches this weekend at The University of Alabama’s Rec Center.
 
UA Theatre and Dance presents “La Ronde” this week
Crimson White – April 9
UA Theatre and Dance will be performing “La Ronde,” a play about intimacy and physical connection this week at the Allen Bales Theatre. The show follows 10 main characters as they navigate relationships between societal classes in Vienna, Austria. The play was written by Arthur Schnitzler in Germany in 1890 and was first performed in 1920. Schnitzler wrote the play as a commentary on the strict class structure that existed at the time. “[Schnitzler] pointed out that there are people from all classes of society that do the same thing,” said Tom Alsip, “La Ronde” director and graduate teaching assistant.

UA Theater and Dance Department to produce “A Chorus Line”

The Tony award winning mega-hit “A Chorus Line” is coming to the Capstone. The show takes us behind the scenes and into the lives of 16 dancers trying to live their dream by getting a chance to sing and dance in the chorus line of a Broadway show. “A Chorus Line” runs April 18-23 at the Marian Gallaway Theatre.

Big Al makes visit to Coffee County Home and Garden Expo

The first Coffee County Home and Garden Expo in nearly 20 years is being called a major success. Big Al, The University of Alabama’s mascot, made the trip all the way from Tuscaloosa to New Brockton for the festivities.
