How should the news media talk about the ‘alt-right’ movement?
Christian Science Monitor – Dec. 8
Comedian Seth Meyers joined the chorus of voices calling for an end to the term “alt-right” Wednesday night, urging the media to instead refer to members of the movement as “white supremacists” or “Nazis.” “Since the election of Donald Trump and the ascension of his right-hand man, Steve Bannon, there have been fears about the rise of white supremacy,” the host of NBC’s “Late Night” said. “Yet the media seems to be bending over backwards to normalize the so-called alt-right movement.” … George Hawley, a professor of political science at the University of Alabama who is working on a book about the alt-right, doesn’t believe the term “white nationalist” is necessary an oversimplification of the alt-right’s views, as it is, “at its core…a racial movement.”

Will the Past Be Repeated?
The Merrow Report – Dec. 8
What follows is a journal of response and reflection after a remarkable 4-day journey along what might be called the Civil Rights Trail, from Jackson, Meridian and Philadelphia in Mississippi, and Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama. My wife and I and about 40 others made this trip at a time of rising anxiety among minorities and many whites about the increase in hate-related behavior following our recent presidential election. The question hanging over us: will we allow the past to repeat itself? Our trip was organized by the Education Policy Center at The University of Alabama and the John C. Stennis Institute of Government at Mississippi State University. Most participants worked at Community Colleges in Alabama and Mississippi and were serving as Educational Policy Fellows in a program run by the Institute for Educational Leadership. My wife and I gained (paid) admission because I serve on the IEL Board.

A new report by the College and University Food Bank Alliance highlights student hunger on U.S. college campuses. Forty-eight percent of students surveyed reported food insecurity within the previous month. Food insecurity is more prevalent among students of color, and more than half of all first-generation students have low food security. Hunger is not just a problem for people of color in urban areas. It’s very much a problem in rural Alabama as well…Back to hunger on college campuses. The University of Alabama has a food closet in the student center. The West Alabama Food Bank is interested in extending that service and making it larger on the University of Alabama campus.

Expect the unexpected

When Jefferson Community College was making plans to build its first residence hall, there was one must-have for President Carole McCoy: generators for backup if the power went out … “Expect the unexpected, basically …. Don’t think that things can’t happen,” said Donald Keith, emergency preparedness director at the University of Alabama, where a 2011 tornado just missed a direct hit but laid bare, among other details, the need for a system to accept and distribute donations of money and supplies offered by well-wishers.
