UA students put their ‘real bodies’ on display

A team of University of Alabama students and faculty is joining with community groups to raise awareness of eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating, as part of national Eating Disorder Awareness Week…Thursday’s “Fashion Rocks — And So Does My Body” fashion show at the Ferguson Center featured students dressed in their own casual, dressy and formal clothes to demonstrate that they were comfortable with their bodies. Suzanne Henson, a UA assistant nutrition professor and registered dietitian, said 45 young women participated in the fashion show as well as a staging of several monologues about eating disorders by Unscripted, the Women’s Resource Center’s theatre group. “The objective is to show off a healthy body image,” Henson said, adding that she was impressed by the number of women who volunteered to model. “They want to show that they feel good about themselves. We all need to appreciate ourselves.”…

To confirm that their results were not specific to yeast alone, Gitler, Cooper and Lindquist collaborated with Associate Professor Guy Caldwell, from the University of Alabama, and Associate Professor Jean-Christophe Rochet from the University of Purdue in Indiana, who verified their results in other Parkinson model systems…
