Eutaw Student Receives UA Award

Bonita Lasha Oliver (center) of Eutaw received the Vivian Malone Jones Award at Black Scholar’s Day during recent Honors Week ceremonies at The University of Alabama. A student in the UA College of Engineering, Oliver is the daughter of Fannie Oliver. Oliver received the award as a graduating senior with high academic standing. It was named in honor of the first black graduate of UA. Oliver is shown with Dr. Joyce Stallworth (left), an assistant professor in English education, and Eleisea Baker (right), assistant director of financial aid.

AREA STUDENT RECEIVES UA AWARD – Benaiah Beracah Gant of Birmingham (zip code 35208) received the Vivian Malone Jones Scholarship at Black Scholar’s Day during recent Honors Week ceremonies at The University of Alabama. A student in the UA College of Engineering, Gant is the son of Vernard and Cynthia Gant. Gant received the scholarship as a member of the junior class with high academic standing. The scholarship was named in honor the first black graduate of UA.

UA STUDENTS RECEIVE HONORS – Javacia Nicole Harris (second from left) of Birmingham (zip code 35211) and Deborah Toluwalope Sodeke (third from left) of Auburn received Academic Excellence Black Scholars Awards during recent Honors Week events at The University of Alabama. They received the awards as students having high cumulative scholastic averages in the sophomore class. Harris is a student in the College of Communication and Information Sciences; Sodeke is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences. UA STUDENTS RECEIVE HONORS – Katara Ann Shaw (left) of Birmingham (zip code 35214) and Lindsey McCall, II (right) of Montgomery received Academic Excellence Black Scholars Awards during recent Honors Week events at The University of Alabama. They received the awards as students having high cumulative scholastic averages in the freshman class. Shaw and McCall are both students in the UA College of Engineering.

UA STUDENT RECEIVES AWARD – Sylvia Elliott (center) of Tuscaloosa received the James Hood Award at Black Scholar’s Day during recent Honors Week events at The University of Alabama. The award is designated for a student who is 25 years or older, and who has demonstrated good academic achievement and triumphed over formidable odds. Shown with Elliott are Bryan Fair (left), UA professor of law, and Brenda Elliott (right), coordinator of athletic academic programs, intercollegiate athletics.

FRANKVILLE STUDENT RECEIVES UA AWARD – Laparry Howell (center) of Frankville received the Autherine Lucy Foster Endowed Scholarship during recent Honors Week ceremonies at The University of Alabama. A student in the UA College of Arts and Sciences, he is the son of A.D. Howell. Pictured with Howell are Dr. Marsha Houston (left), chair of the UA communicative studies department, and Dr. Tom Strong (right), UA dean of students.
