TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A University of Alabama student was selected to work as an intern this summer for Washington Internships for Students of Engineering, or WISE.
Andy Cloyd, a senior in mechanical engineering from Lexington, Kentucky, will spend nine weeks living in Washington D.C., where he will engage with government officials to learn how public policy impacts engineering technology and advancement.
Cloyd, a member of UA’s American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers branch, will intern as a representative of the organization.
ASHRAE is a global society founded in 1894 and focuses on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education.
“I am extremely excited to represent such a helpful organization and look forward to the opportunity,” Cloyd said.
The WISE internship was founded in 1980 to train engineering students interested in the intersection of science, technology and public policy. Each year students are chosen from a nationwide pool, and, during the summer, the students work under the guidance of an engineering/public policy professional who creates a schedule of field trips in which interns meet with public policy officials. Each student is expected to complete a paper on a previously selected, topical engineering-related public policy issue.
