TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s 13th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Fight, sponsored by the Community Service Center, is being kicked off on World Food Day, Monday, Oct. 16 with an event on campus from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Fight is an annual service competition between students at UA and Auburn. The food drive capitalizes on the rivalry that exists between the two schools to help alleviate hunger around the state.
The kickoff event at the Ferguson Plaza will include appearances by Big Al, the Afro-American Gospel Choir, Jake and Steve from WVUA- FM, and Craig Young, the executive director of the West Alabama Food Bank.
The food drive will be under way from Oct. 16 to Nov. 16. All donations will be given to the West Alabama Food Bank to distribute in nine West Alabama counties, including Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Sumter and Tuscaloosa.
Students can donate non-perishable food items such as canned food, rice, beans, and baby formula at the kickoff party and afterward at any UA residence hall, the donation truck located in the cul-de-sac near B.B. Comer Hall and Woods Quad, and at the West Alabama Food Bank.
Food collection is measured in pounds. The winning school will be announced at the Iron Bowl on Nov. 18.
There are also six intra-campus competitive categories for donations:
fraternities and sororities, student organizations, residence halls, faculty and staff, individuals and community donations.
UA faculty, students and staff can give monetary donations from their ACT cards at all Bama Dining locations; Bama Dining will match up to $2,000 that is donated from ACT cards.
Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is sponsored by the Community Service Center, the West Alabama Food Bank, Two Men and a Truck and Bama Dining.
World Food Day 2006 has the theme “Investing in Agriculture for Food Security.” The annual event has been held by the United Nations since 1945.
