South African artist Butler headlines concert at UA
Tuscaloosa News – Jan. 13
Sunday’s 27th annual Tuscaloosa celebration of the life and work of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will feature South African jazz/R&B singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler for the 2016 Realizing the Dream Concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Moody Music Concert Hall on the University of Alabama campus. Tickets are $15. Friday, former U.S. attorney G. Douglas Jones will deliver the annual Legacy Banquet lecture, 6:30 p.m. at the Embassy Suites hotel in downtown Tuscaloosa. Banquet tickets are $25 each, or $200 for a table of 10. Dress is semi-formal.

OUR VIEW: Roadways getting deadlier

“Are roadways getting more dangerous?” We probably could pick a random telephone number, call it, ask that question and get a positive response, but there’s also supporting data. The final 2015 numbers aren’t yet available, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates traffic fatalities for the first six months were up 8.1 percent over 2014. Closer to home, the Center for Advanced Public Safety at the University of Alabama monitors wrecks investigated by State Troopers. Its 2015 data showed a 9.3 percent increase in overall crashes, a 12.3 percent increase in fatal and non-fatal injuries and a 2.9 percent increase in deaths.

Catholic Student Center on UA campus to be named for Saban

A new building on The University of Alabama campus is going to be named after Coach Nick Saban. St. Francis of Assisi University Parish plans to break ground next month on the Saban Catholic Student Center, which will accommodate the nearly 3,000 Catholic students on The University of Alabama campus.
