Renowned Fairhope artist unveils painting for University of Alabama library
Tuscaloosa News – Nov. 8
The University of Alabama on Sunday took a look back to at its origin. Dean Mosher, a renowned artist from Fairhope, unveiled his painting of the University of Alabama near the center of the present day Quad as it appeared in 1831. A ceremony to mark the unveiling of “The Birth of Alabama’s First Great University” was held Sunday in the Pearce Grand Foyer of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library. Mosher, was asked to create the 6-foot by 14-foot, 9-inch canvas by Judy Bonner, UA’s president from November 2012 to July 2015. Mosher had little in the way of photographs for reference when creating the painting of the campus. In fact, he only had one photo. “There is only one known photograph taken of the early campus that was taken in 1859 by a student in the center of the roof of the President’s Mansion looking at the campus” Mosher said.
UA production ‘Equivocation’ links Shakespeare and the Gunpowder Plot
Tuscaloosa News – Nov. 7
While he has only been in town for a few months, David Trump is quickly adjusting in his first semester at the University of Alabama, studying in the master of fine arts acting program. Trump is originally from Louisville, Ky.; he attended Northern Kentucky University for his bachelor’s. While getting used to his new town, Trump has auditioned, been selected for and begun rehearsing the role of William Shakespeare — also known as Shag and Shagspeare, plays on the writer’s infamous varied spellings — in Bill Cain’s play, “Equivocation,” which opens Monday in the Allen Bales Theatre. Cain’s work premiered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2009. This is the UA debut, and probably the state debut, for “Equivocation,” which asks what would have happened if the English government had commissioned Shakespeare to craft a play based on the Gunpowder Plot, in which 13 Catholics were accused of attempting — and failing — to blow up Parliament and King James I.

Auburn Equestrian team donates horses to UA
Tuscaloosa News – Nov. 7
In the shadow of one of college football’s most heated in-state rivalries, Auburn University’s equestrian team is helping its counterpart at the University of Alabama with the donation of two competition horses to UA’s developing program. “To me this really demonstrates the support that Auburn University is giving to our equestrian program to help us be successful,” said Diane Harrison, director of equestrian operations at UA. Auburn has a successful NCAA program, currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. Alabama’s equestrian program, which started as a club sport among students, is still working toward becoming a varsity sport. The UA program uses a private facility off campus for practice and competitions. It is in the early stages of fundraising to build its own equestrian facility. The University of Alabama System board of trustees voted on Friday to accept the gift of two Westphalian warmblood geldings from the Auburn University Board of Trustees in support of the program at UA.
