CAREER AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Students are invited to join the Generations Action Team for volunteer service at Morning Pointe Assisted Living on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 3-6 p.m. Participants will garden, play bingo and trivia games, and do arts and crafts with the residents. Volunteers will gather at the Center for Sustainable Service and Volunteerism in the Ferguson Center at 3 p.m. Transportation will be provided. The Center for Sustainable Service and Volunteerism is working with Habitat for Humanity. Participating students can earn SLPro hours. Two sessions on Oct. 24 are available: 8 a.m.-12:15 p.m. or 12:30-4:45 p.m. A maximum of 20 students can sign up for each session. Students cannot drive themselves to the actual work site; transportation will be provided by the CSSV. Students should meet by the Ferguson Center roundabout at the listed time for their session, and they should expect to be back by the listed time for their session. Closed-toe footwear and long pants are required. Waivers will be signed on the way to the work site. Students can sign up at http://goo.gl/Ue42mx.
Students who are interested in joining a new chapter of Global Medical Brigades on campus can send an email to uaglobalmedicalbrigades@gmail.com. Global Medical Brigades plans a 10-day international trip every year to serve in clinics and provide health education seminars to local populations.
EVENTS
All graduate students are invited to participate in the three-minute thesis, or 3MT, mock competition session on Friday, Oct. 10, from noon to 3 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Students should be ready to present their three-minute theses to a panel of mock judges. Students will have time to respond to questions from the judges, receive coaching and written feedback. Be the Match on Campus will host a two-day bone-marrow-registry drive as part of a competition versus Texas A&M’s Be the Match on Campus student organization. The Student Health Fair will be held Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Ferguson Center plaza. Fiction Collective Two, or FC2, invites students to an evening of storytelling at the Bama Theatre on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. A reception will follow. The event is free. The Bama Theatre is located at 600 Greensboro Ave. FC2 is an imprint of The University of Alabama Press and a publisher of avant-garde, experimental and cutting-edge fiction. Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month continues through Oct. 23 on the UA campus. The listed events, which are offered in collaboration with UA departments and groups, are free and open to the public. Events are also listed on the UA Events Calendar.
Students are invited to support Beat Auburn Beat Hunger and the West Alabama Food Bank by participating in the fourth annual BABH 5K race and 1-mile fun run on Oct. 19. All participants are encouraged to wear their funkiest, most colorful socks. All participants will receive a BABH water bottle. Post-race refreshments will be served, and prizes for funkiest socks will be awarded to female and male participants. The race will begin and end at the lower parking lot of the Student Recreation Center on Campus Drive East. As part of Domestic Violence Month, the Women’s Resource Center is collecting used cellphones — in working order or not. The UA community can drop off phones and accessories at the center or the Office of the Dean of Students. The phones will be recycled and used to help those affected by dating and domestic violence. OIT has no reason to believe that any systems have been compromised at this time; however, OIT urges anyone who has used the service to immediately change their myBama passwords. Students should remember to never share their myBama credentials with anyone or provide this information to any website, email request or service not associated with The University of Alabama. Doing so could compromise their myBama accounts. MyTickets is the place to donate tickets or place a name on the wait list for a ticket to next week’s home football game. The Alabama Crimson Tide football team’s next home game will be against the Texas A&M Aggies at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Students who do not have a ticket to next week’s home game, or have a ticket and would like to donate it should access MyTickets from myBama.ua.edu or UA’s mobile app for more information. MyTickets opens on Sunday at 1 p.m. prior to each home football game and closes at the start of halftime of that game. For more information, visit Action Card Office (click on MyTickets).
