ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Americans with Disabilities Act ramp between the Student Services Center and the Ferguson Center will be temporarily closed until Aug. 16 to allow for the completion of the second phase of the ongoing Crimson Promenade construction. All Crimson Promenade ADA traffic will be rerouted around the east side of the Ferguson Center during that period.
The University of Alabama requires that every bicycle owned, operated or stored on campus be registered. Registration is available online or people can register by filling out the proper forms at the Transportation Services office located at the Campus Drive Parking Deck at 451 Campus Drive East. Forms are also available at the Student Recreation Center. Bike registration is free. For a complete set of rules and regulations regarding the bike policy, visit http://bamaparking.ua.edu/bicycle. Bama’s Stay on Your Side campaign reminds the UA community to use crosswalks, sidewalks and streets appropriately. The City of Tuscaloosa has temporarily extended service hours for the water and sewer department. Customer service phone banks will operate to 6 p.m. each Monday through Friday. The extended hours will continue through Aug. 20 or until the demand for new service subsides. Customers can reach the water department during these extended hours at 248-5500 or ubcontact@tuscaloosa.com.
New customers can set up an account online at http://www.tuscaloosa.com/onlineservices. Existing customers can pay bills and track account history online at http://www.tuscaloosa.com/onlinebills. Students can access a student tab on the city’s home page for student-specific needs.
All University departments and entities using logos, word marks, symbols and other identifiers should remember the following:
- The University has an official visual identity guide that mandates graphic standards for typography, color, word marks and style. The guide provides logos and templates for a variety of vehicles and provides a unifying image that is vital to institutional communications. Visit http://visualid.ua.edu.
- The Capstone logo (capital A in crimson square) and the tagline The Capstone of Higher Education should be used in all print, Web and video communications. UA is no longer using the Touching Lives logo or tagline.
- Permission from Intercollegiate Athletics is required to use IA’s logos and symbols. Visit http://www.rolltide.com/licensing or contact Cole Price at cprice@ia.ua.edu.
- The UA registration mark must be included on all logos. The visual identity guide includes registration mark specifications.
Divisions, departments, organizations and student clubs seeking customized logos should work with the Office of Design and Production to ensure logos comply with the standards of the visual identity guide.
As part of the 10th annual College Colors Day celebration, The University of Alabama is participating in the Spirit Cup competition. Prizes include a $10,000 donation toward the general scholarship fund and a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to the College Football Playoff national championship game. The competition is currently ongoing and will end Aug. 28. Winners will be announced on College Colors Day, Aug. 29. SAFETY
The University of Alabama’s 24-hour hazing and harassment hotline at 205-348-HALT (4258) allows students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. UAct: Working together to create an ethical community defined by respect and civility provides UA students, employees and visitors with a list of reporting channels they can use to report incidences of illegal discrimination, harassment, sexual assault, sexual violence, retaliation, threat assessment or fraud. Using information from the site, any UA student, employee, job applicant or visitor who has concerns can seek the assistance of the appropriate University official designated in the UAct document. UAct was created as part of UA’s commitment to provide a safe environment for students, employees and campus visitors. For more information, visit http://www.ua.edu/uact.
Rave Guardian, a mobile safety program offered by The University of Alabama, is now available for smartphone users as a free application. The previous form of the program has been discontinued. Rave Guardian allows students to use their smartphones to notify The University of Alabama Police Department at the touch of a button for emergency assistance or to set a passive timer based on their expected arrival times at a destination on campus or in the Tuscaloosa area.
If a student initiates an emergency call or if the notification timer is not deactivated, Guardian software provides UAPD with critical profile information and, in most cases, GPS information to help contact and locate the student if necessary.
The app may be downloaded from the app store, or go to http://mybama.ua.edu and select the Guardian link. The Guardian app must have permission to access the location services on the smartphone in order for UAPD to be able to see the phone’s location.
When on campus and in the immediate vicinity of campus, students with an emergency should call The University of Alabama Police Department at 205-348-5454 rather than at 911. Students should program the UAPD number into their cellphone’s speed dial.
Students should also avoid traveling alone at night and confine walking to well-lit, regular-traveled walks and pathways. Students can refer to the Safer Living Guide for safety precautions to take on and off campus.
STUDENT AFFAIRS
Registration is underway for Get on Board Day, which will be held Aug. 28 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Seventh Avenue near the Ferguson Center. GOBD will also be paired with two additional events on Sept. 25 and Oct. 2. These events are designed to continue engagement opportunities for students throughout the semester and to give them a chance to interact with student organizations and departments in different formats. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Ripple Effect, sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Service and Volunteerism (formerly Community Service Center), is the premiere service opportunity for freshmen and transfer students during the Week of Welcome. The event teams UA faculty and staff with groups of students, providing an opportunity to work together on activities other than coursework. The CSSV is partnering with community agencies to provide meaningful service projects that include painting, cleaning, building and landscaping. The University of Alabama’s Week of Welcome is a series of programs hosted by the University to help first year and transfer students in their transition to academic and student life at the Capstone.
