UA Professor to Chair Alabama Committee on Civil Rights

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. David T. Beito, associate professor of history at The University of Alabama, has been selected to chair the federally appointed State Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights.

Dr. Charles W. Nuckolls, professor of anthropology at UA, is also a member. Others appointed to the committee include Betty Peters, a member of the Alabama Board of Education, and Margaret Brown, policy director of the Alabama Eagle Forum.

The purpose of the federally appointed Committee is to study and collect information relating to discrimination or a denial of equal protection of the laws under the Constitution because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability or national origin, or in the administration of justice.

The committee’s first meeting is scheduled this month.
