STUDENT AFFAIRS
The Office of Student Conduct reminds faculty, staff and students that the Code of Student Conduct has been revised. Revisions include but are not limited to language related to hazing, harassment, sexual misconduct, disclosure of arrests and convictions, and retaliation for reporting of violations of the code.
The Office of Student Conduct, a department of the Dean of Students, adjudicates cases arising from nonacademic misconduct and educates students about making good choices before misconduct occurs. Responsibility, accountability and good decision-making are foundational concepts that the OSC staff communicates to students.
The revised code can be found online at http://sc.ua.edu/code.cfm. A link to a PDF of the code is at the bottom of the page.
Capstone Alliance and several campus departments will recognize the accomplishments of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and allied students who will be May, August or December 2014 graduates of The University of Alabama. Lavender Graduation 2014 will be held April 21 at 7 p.m. in the Woodis-McDonald Auditorium at Bibb Graves Hall. To participate as a graduate, students can click here to register. Registration closes Wednesday, April 16, at 11:59 p.m. For more information about the upcoming event, as well as past ceremonies, click here.
WELL-BEING
The Mental Health Strategic Team at The University of Alabama offers the following tips for dealing with stress:
- The best stress management is preventive. Learn positive coping methods and skills long before stressful events arise.
- One of the most powerful methods of managing exam stress is adequate preparation and study distributed over a period of days and weeks rather than massed study known as cramming.
- Students who consume a healthy diet, get plenty of high-quality sleep and do things in moderation will perform better and experience less stress than those who do not.
- During stressful times, students should reach out to others. Communicating with a counselor or health care provider can help students acquire needed skills and feel less isolated. Students can also gain needed perspective by talking with concerned others, including faculty and staff.
- Students can learn more about nutrition services offered at the Student Health Center at http://shc.ua.edu/clinic-services/individual and about stress management at http://www.counseling.ua.edu/outreachResources.cfm. Students should also check out the resources at the Center for Academic Success at http://www.cas.ua.edu
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Student Opinions of Instruction course-evaluation surveys run today through April 27. SOI allows students to confidentially rate their UA learning experiences and encourages feedback about their courses and instructors. Students can now select either the standard or the new mobile view of SOI. The mobile feature makes the surveys easy to navigate using smartphones or other mobile devices. The mobile feature functions well with newer Android, iOS and Windows mobile devices. Confidential reports of survey results are provided to UA faculty and administrators after grades are submitted. Student ratings are important in helping instructors improve their teaching and in helping the University evaluate courses and faculty. Visit the SOI website at http://oira.ua.edu/soi/soi_info.html or send an email to soi@ua.edu.
Scholars for Community, Outreach, Partnership and Engagement is accepting applications for Fall Semester 2014 at two levels: SCOPE research associates (undergraduate students) and SCOPE fellows (graduate students). The purpose of SCOPE is to enhance the capacity of UA students to collaborate with faculty and community partners in achieving mutually beneficial outcomes to address challenges facing communities. For more information or to obtain an application, contact Dr. Melanie Miller at uascope@ua.edu or 348-7392.
The Women’s Resource Center encourages faculty, staff and students to wear teal ribbons throughout April to honor victims of sexual assault and to raise awareness of the crime. Ribbons are available at the Women’s Resource Center in the South Lawn Office Building at 1101 Jackson Ave. More information: Jessica Hitchins at jlhitchins@sa.ua.edu or 348-5040.
