HALLOWEEN EVENTS

Sorority Row Trick-or-Treat will take place on Magnolia Drive and Colonial Drive Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Surrounding roads will close to vehicle traffic beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m. and will reopen shortly after 8 p.m., or when there is no longer any danger to pedestrian traffic. The following roads will be closed: Colonial Drive at University Boulevard, Magnolia Drive at Bryant Drive, Magnolia Drive at Colonial Drive, Eighth Street at Colonial Drive, and the alley between Doster Hall and Harris Hall. UA employees who park in the Rose Administration Reserve Lot are asked to exit that lot by turning left onto Magnolia Drive. Those who park in the Communications Card Reserve Lot are asked to exit that lot via Stadium Drive. Click here to locate the areas on a campus map.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 

The Riverside Community pedestrian bridge will be closed Oct. 31-Nov. 3.

 Fall Break for students will be Oct. 31-Nov. 1. No classes will be held. The following auxiliary services will operate special hours as noted.

  • Ferguson Mail Center — The Ferguson Mail Center will close at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, and Friday, Nov. 1, and will close all day Saturday, Nov. 2. Regular hours will resume Monday, Nov. 4.
  • Crimson RideCrimson Ride will operate limited service Oct. 31-Nov 1. The on-campus bus routes will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., then 348-RIDE will operate. Bus service will use a break schedule that consists of half of the buses on the normal daily routes. The 348-RIDE service and the shopping shuttle will operate as usual on the weekend. Regular bus service will resume Nov. 4 at 7 a.m.

By Oct. 15 of each year, each coeducational institution of higher education that participates in any federal student aid program and has an intercollegiate athletic program must prepare an Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act report and make it available upon request to students, potential students and the public. The University of Alabama Department of Athletics’ report for the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act is available upon request at the following locations: Office of Intercollegiate Athletics and Office of University Relations. The report can be accessed on the Internet at https://eada.ia.ua.edu. A paper copy of the report will be provided upon request by contacting the Office of University Relations.

SAFETY

The University of Alabama’s 24-hour HALT hotline allows students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The UA Community Service Center hosts Alternative Break trips throughout the year for students who would like to volunteer in either the United States or abroad. Nov. 1 is the application deadline for the winter international trip to Costa Rica (Dec. 14-20) and the winter domestic trip to work with Habitat for Humanity in Lee County, Ala., (Dec. 14-17). ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 

Students are invited to pick up an Academic Scavenger Hunt passport in the Student Government Association office, the Writing Center or any of the libraries on campus. Students should fill out the passport and return it to the SGA office on the second floor of the Ferguson Center by Nov. 11 to be entered into a drawing to win prizes. Graduate Students are invited to submit abstracts for the 2014 Alabama Modern Languages Conference. The conference will take place Feb. 7-8. Graduate students in any discipline are invited to present 20-minute papers in English, Spanish, French or German relating to the theme of “Converging Cultures: Languages, Literatures, and Identity.” The deadline for abstract submission is Nov. 15, 2013. EVENTS

Presidential Village will host its second annual “BOOville” for the children of Tuscaloosa on Oct. 29 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Barbecue will be served. Events include carnival games and a haunted house. More information: Quenesha Ward at qmward@crimson.ua.edu.

The University of Alabama’s Panhellenic Association will host the annual Sorority Row Trick-or-Treat Oct. 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Children from the Tuscaloosa area, ages 12 and younger, are invited to dress up in Halloween costumes and visit the lawns of the campus sorority houses on Magnolia and Colonial drives for candy and activities. The community is invited to experience some of the legends that have been passed down from generation to generation during the third annual Haunting at the Museum from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 29. Sponsored by UA’s Alabama Museum of Natural History, the free event is open to all ages and features guided, candlelit ghost walks around the Quad, followed by children’s activities, a scavenger hunt and ghost stories at the museum, which is located in Smith Hall. Students who are considering moving off campus next year are invited to Rental Live 101. Representatives of the following organizations will present information: UA’s Housing and Residential Communities, Rumsey Properties and Crimson Choice. Door prizes and giveaways will be available.

The Honors College invites students to University of Alabama Town Hall: Student Debt. This event will feature three knowledgeable speakers who can provide some insight into the raw figures of student debt and what is being done to tackle the rapid growth of the problem. The free event will be held Monday, Nov. 4, at 6:30 p.m. in 360 Ferguson Center.

The University of Alabama Honors College and the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility will host a lecture by author Jeff Speck on Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center. Speck, an internationally known city planner and architectural designer, will discuss the importance of walkability to a downtown community. The lecture is free and open to the public. The Alabama Center for the Book and The University of Alabama Press invite UA students, faculty and staff and the public to a lunchtime speaker series spotlighting recent works by Alabama writers. The first speaker in the series is Dr. Robert Oliver Mellown, UA associate professor emeritus of art history, who will spotlight his new book, “The University of Alabama: A Guide to the Campus and Its Architecture.” The lecture will be Nov. 7 from noon to 1 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library.
