Culverhouses’ $1 million gift to support Alabama business students
Tuscaloosa News – Aug. 23
Eliza and Hugh Culverhouse Jr. have given $1 million to the Culverhouse College of Commerce at the University of Alabama to fund scholarships meant to help students avoid accruing debt as they pursue educations. “I want to help the people who are utterly enslaved by student debt,” Hugh Culverhouse Jr. said. Culverhouse said the couple’s gift was inspired by a worry that debt may force college graduates to choose between lower-paying jobs they are passionate about and ones that will allow them to pay the bills. Business Dean Michael Hardin said the Eliza and Hugh F. Culverhouse Student Assistance Scholarship will focus on academically gifted undergraduates who don’t qualify for other scholarship opportunities and otherwise would be faced with funding their education with loans. Hardin said currently the college plans to offer three to four scholarships annually, adding three students have already been selected as recipients for the fall.

Special grand jury convened in Lee County, nature of probe unclear
Al.com – Aug. 21
Prosecutors have convened a special grand jury in Lee County, but the subject of the probe is unclear. A spokeswoman for Attorney General Luther Strange declined to comment, as did Lee County District attorney Robert Treese. Joseph Colquitt, a retired judge and professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, said special grand juries are sometimes used to delve into complex or potentially time-consuming matters. Colquitt said they are also used sometimes if there is a pressing matter or to relieve the heavy workload of the regular grand jury. “The term special grand jury tells you something special is afoot,” Colquitt said. According to a court document, Judge Jacob A. Walker III on July 29 signed an empaneling order for a special grand jury in response to a motion filed by the state of Alabama.
