Nine bike racks at the southeast corner of the Ferguson Center will be taken out of service in preparation for the new Ferguson Center addition. Students should remove their bikes by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13. New bike racks have been installed on Seventh Avenue near Houser Hall and the South Engineering Research Center. Housing and Residential Communities has launched a website at http://offcampushousing.ua.edu to aid students in finding off-campus housing. Students can search for off-campus housing using parameters such as distance from campus, monthly cost, number of bedrooms or bathrooms, amenities and availability date. They can also search for off-campus roommates, furniture for sale and subleases from other students. Additional information includes landlord and tenant issues, leases, city ordinances and budgeting. UA faculty and staff and the general public can also use the website. The service is free for UA students, parents, faculty and staff. Property managers and owners will pay a fee to post listings. As a reminder,UA employees and students could be in violation of the Zoning Ordinance of Tuscaloosa (Chapter 24 of the Code of Tuscaloosa) if they rent out their homes during sporting or other events held in Tuscaloosa. The UA mobile application has a new update for all iOS devices, including iPods, iPhones and iPads. The update includes new features for the Action Card. Users can make deposits, check balances and review transactions for Bama Cash and Dining Dollars. To make deposits, users must first save their account information in the secured Action Card portion in myBama. For additional information, contact the Action Card office at http://actcard.ua.edu.

The update also improves functionality for iPads using Blackboard Learn. The native iPad version of the Blackboard Mobile Learn application can be accessed from within the UA application installed on iPads. The iPhone/iPod Touch version is also available. When selecting the Learn feature, users will be directed to the Application Store to download the free version of Blackboard Mobile Learn separately if they haven’t already done so. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Students can make a difference in the community and earn 3 hours of honors credit through PlanFirst, a service-learning course in which students will focus on the various facets of Tuscaloosa’s planning department. Students in PlanFirst will spend an initial six weeks learning about the city of Tuscaloosa, general planning principles, cooperation and conflict communication, and the rebuilding process. Students will also spend six weeks serving and shadowing city of Tuscaloosa planning staff. The course is open to UA students of any major who are in good standing with the Honors College and have an interest in some aspect of city planning. The University Stewards is accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year. University Stewards provide personalized campus visits for prospective students and their families. EVENTS

First Generation Scholars’ Week began March 11 and will continue through March 14. The week will include a variety of workshops and activities for first-generation students. Dr. Archie Wade, retired professor of kinesiology at UA, will be honored Tuesday, March 12, at 4 p.m. in the Graves Hall auditorium for his role in diversifying the campus. Wade, who began teaching at UA in 1970, was one of the University’s first black faculty members. The ceremony is free and open to the public as part of the University’s “Through the Doors” event series, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of integration at UA.

The SGA Judicial Board invites the University community to the second annual Coaching Character event Tuesday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the North Zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium. David “The Dating Doctor” Coleman, a 13-time national speaker of the year, will be on campus Wednesday, March 13, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. The audience will determine the topics that will be covered once they enter the theater and will also act as consultants for one another, challenging and supporting each other during a continuous give-and-take on issues of healthy relationships. University Programs will take a limited number of students to Cobb Theatres to see “Oz the Great and Powerful” in 3-D on Wednesday, March 13. Limited seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who register to attend the event must ride the buses provided by UP. Check-in will start promptly at 5:15 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Buses will load and leave for Cobb Theatres at 5:30 p.m. Individuals may register for free at http://uaferguson.tix.com. Alpha Delta Chi will hold a bake sale, “Cookies for a Cause,” Thursday, March 14, in the Ferguson Center on the main floor by the front desk and the west dining area. The Society of Women Engineers will host Pie Day Thursday, March 14, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Science and Engineering Quad. A “winning” professor from each College of Engineering department will receive a pie to the face.

Pi Kappa Phi, Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Delta Pi and Pi Kappa Alpha will host a “Pie A Pi” philanthropy event at the front yard of the Pi Kappa Phi house on Thursday, March 14, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Attendees will be allowed to throw pies at their favorite Pi’s from each of the fraternities and sororities participating. Music and food will be provided. Tickets are $5 at the door or can be purchased beforehand from any of the philanthropy chairs of the sororities and fraternities. Proceeds will benefit families whose children are dealing with medical issues.

Join the “One Team. One Bama.” movement in building a stronger UA community. On Friday, March 15, students can visit the second floor of the Ferguson Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to make their personal pledges and receive their “Hey Y’all” T-shirts. Students who wear their T-shirts to the baseball game against the University of Tennessee on March 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Sewell-Thomas Stadium will be eligible for prizes. Delta Tau Delta fraternity will hold an event to help a little girl who has leukemia and is in need of a bone-marrow transplant but first must find a donor-match. On Friday, March 15, between noon and 4 p.m., students can volunteer to get their mouths swabbed at the Delta Tau Delta house. More information: Ryan Keeler at rrkeeler@crimson.ua.edu.

Delta Zeta and Kappa Sigma will host Turtle Tug on Friday, March 15, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kappa Sigma house. Proceeds from this annual tug of war will benefit Delta Zeta’s chosen charity. The losing team in each round will be pulled into a pool of gelatin. The winning team will receive a prize. Each team must contain six members, with at least two of the members being female. The cost of $48 per team includes food. Spectators can pay $5 to enjoy food and entertainment. Tickets will also be sold at the door.

UA’s Afro-American Gospel Choir will present its annual benefit concert Saturday, March 16, at 5 p.m. at the University Church of Christ at 1200 Julia Tutwiler Drive in Tuscaloosa. University Programs will take 20 students to All Fired Up where they can paint their own pottery and create their own mosaics. The event will be Sunday, March 17. “Crimson Culture: Festival of the Arts” will be held Sunday, March 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. The event is sponsored by the South Asian Society and the Student Government Association at UA. During Crimson Culture, students from different campus organizations will showcase their hidden talents. The event is free, and a free multicultural dinner will be provided before the main event. All female UA students, faculty and their family members over the age of 15 are invited to one of two women-empowerment sessions on March 21 in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. The first session begins at 6 p.m., followed by the second session at 8 p.m. Each session is free and will teach self-defense and raise awareness of sexual assault. The Campus Veterans Association will host its second annual golf tournament at the Capstone Club of Alabama in Brookwood, Ala., on April 13. Registration is $90 per person or $300 per team. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Community Service Center is hosting Stop Hunger Now to raise money to package meals that will be sent to countries in need. The goal is to raise $2,500 to package 10,000 meals. The Center for Community-Based Partnerships is seeking volunteers for the Heart Touch program. Heart Touch is a culture-enrichment program that provides an opportunity for youth and children in the United States and China to learn about each country’s culture through letter writing and presentations. UA students can volunteer to serve as pen pal translators and as activity assistants in after-school programs held by Tuscaloosa’s One Place in seven elementary schools.
