UA Telecommunication and Film Wins Seven National Awards

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Students and faculty from The University of Alabama’s telecommunication and film department won seven awards in the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts, the Association recently announced.

“The BEA Festival of Media Arts is a big deal, very competitive with high rejection rates,” said Dr. Glenda Cantrell-Williams, chair of the telecommunication and film department. “These national awards speak to the quality of our production and news faculty and students. I’m very proud of our department.”

UA’s TCF department is the only program in the state of Alabama to place in any of the BEA awards this year, Williams said.

The awards will be presented at the BEA’s annual convention in April. Below are the awards and student hometowns:

Mixed Video (Teacher/Student Co-Production) –

Best of Festival: Dwight Cammeron, instructor, for “April’s Hero” (Mixed Video -Teacher/Student Co-Production), Shelby Hadden (Franklin, Tenn.)

Award of Excellence: Dr. Rachel Raimist, assistant professor, Branna Burns (Anniston) and Greg Kubik (Glenview, Ill.), for “Art to Life”

Student Video Competition (Music Video Category): 

First Place: Micah K. Russell (Huntsville), for “Gifted’s ‘Superstar'”

Student Documentary Competition:

AOX Research & Producing:  Shelby Hadden (Franklin, Tenn.), for “Never Got a Dime”

Long Form Documentary Competition:

Honorable Mention: Greg Kubik, for “Alabama Art Seen, Episode 102”

Student Interactive Multimedia Competition (Small Team): 

First Place: Jasmine Cannon (Opelika), Ka’Leah Rodgers (Mobile) and Zack Guiterrez (Montgomery), for “Forest Lake Tuscaloosa Multimedia Project”

Student News Competition (Radio Feature Reporting):

Third Place: Taylor Crosby (Rockford, Tenn.), for “Dorm Cooking Using a Microwave”
