ANNOUNCEMENTS

The University of Alabama will observe a moment of silence on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. in remembrance of Dr. James Hood, one of the first African-American students to enroll at the University on June 11, 1963. The moment of silence will coincide with the time of Hood’s funeral, which will be held at Gadsden’s First United Methodist Church.  Hood, who received his doctorate from UA, died last week in Gadsden at the age of 70. In 2010, UA dedicated the Malone-Hood Plaza in honor of Hood and Vivan Malone, the other African-American student to enroll at UA on June 11, 1963. EVENTS

The SOURCE and the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership present “Get on Board: Trio Edition,” a three-day Get on Board event. Day 1 was held Jan. 22. Organizations that will participate the final two days and their schedules are as follows:

The Law School Fair will be held Thursday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ballroom on the third floor of the Ferguson Center. Representatives from law schools across the country will speak with students about their law schools, provide advice and information, and answer any questions. Attire is business or business-casual. Students can learn how to use library resources for career exploration and preparation by attending a free workshop Jan. 30 from noon to 1 p.m. in 109 Gorgas Library. Participants will discover, access and navigate library and government resources designed specifically to aid in career exploration, job searching and interview preparation. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Students preparing for graduate school can test their skills with a free practice MCAT, GRE or LSAT. Participants will receive a detailed analysis of their performances on the exams, including individual strengths and weaknesses on every question type. The tests will be offered on Feb. 16 at 9 a.m. in Lloyd Hall. The offices for the departments of American studies and anthropology have moved to the old Capstone Medical Center for the Spring Semester 2013 due to renovations in ten Hoor Hall. The American studies main office is temporarily located in Room 236 of the CMC and the anthropology main office is temporarily located in Room 323. The Capstone Medical Center is located at 700 University Blvd. E. between the Stallings Center (RISE program) and the School of Nursing on the eastern edge of campus near McFarland Boulevard. STUDENT AFFAIRS

Applications for Peer Leaders are due Jan. 28. UA Peer Leaders partner with faculty members to serve as role models and mentors for first-year students and also contribute to the instruction of courses for those students. The courses are designed to support new students as they transition to UA. Peer Leaders participate in training in Spring Semester 2013 and serve in their roles for Fall Semester 2013, while also participating in a fall forum that can be taken for course credit. SGA Judicial Board applications are now available on http://sga.ua.edu, http://www.ja.ua.edu/index.cfm and at the Judicial Affairs office. The board adjudicates cases arising from student nonacademic misconduct and parking violations. Applicants should be dependable, punctual and fair-minded undergraduate, graduate and law students committed to supporting the philosophy of the Code of Student Conduct and the Capstone Creed. Applications must be turned into the Judicial Affairs office, 107 Mary Burke West, by Feb. 19 at 4:45 p.m.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Alpha Delta Chi sorority invites UA female students to participate in ADC’s spring rush.Alpha Delta Chi is a Christian sorority devoted to developing relationships among women with interest in scholastic, social and spiritual aspects of campus life. EMPLOYMENT/VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Al’s Pals program is seeking UA students to volunteer as mentors to local at-risk children in first through fifth grades. Mentors would work with students at Oakdale Elementary School and the McKenzie Court Community Service Center from 2:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. each Wednesday or Thursday. Homegrown Alabama is currently filling several positions and is seeking interested students to help plan and run the market.Homegrown Alabama is a student-run, on-campus farmers market held each year from April through October. Positions are suitable for students who are interested in local food, small business, nonprofits, event planning, public relations, marketing, arts and crafts, and local music. Available positions include assistant market manager, kids’ crafts coordinator, craft-vendor coordinator, talent booking and other leadership positions.
