UA’s Week of Welcome offers flurry of events for new students

Here come the students, folks. Early move-in started on Thursday, and the University of Alabama will provide its annual Week of Welcome from Friday, Aug. 17 through Thursday, Aug. 30. The Ferguson Center’s Division of Student Affairs is inviting all students to the two-week series of more than 50 events and activities designed to help first-year and transfer students acclimate to academic and student life at UA. Ferguson Center staff will offer a variety of services, collaborative programming and leisure-time activities meant to embody the school’s overall academic, research and service mission while also enhancing each student’s learning experience. Megan Barnes, a planning committee member and graduate student from Enterprise, said the events are geared toward first-generation students, transfer students, out-of-state and international students. Some will center on interests such as painting, health, recreation, athletics, music, volunteerism and more. WOW will kick off with “An Evening by the River” on Friday, Aug. 17, offering students and their families a time to relax at the end of move-in day by enjoying the scenic river view from the pavilion of the Cypress Inn restaurant, UA says.

Nineteen-hundred girls are expected to take part in rush on the University of Alabama campus. It kicks off tomorrow. But first, they have to rush to get moved in. This is expected to be the largest incoming freshman class in University of Alabama history.
UA graduate student finds snail thought to be extinct

A University of Alabama graduate student discovered a snail in the Cahaba River that was declared extinct 12 years ago. Nathan Whelan says he found the “oblong rocksnail” on May 22 of last year. A scientific journal reported the details this week.
