92-year-old war veteran receives honorary degree
Dothan Eagle – May 21
Selden Bailey was seven semesters into a journey toward a law degree at the University of Alabama when he was called into duty for his country during World War II. Monday, the university finally awarded the retired U.S. Army colonel an honorary degree, nearly 70 years after he left Tuscaloosa. “Everybody has a circumstance, and my circumstance is such that when I was ordered to active duty, I had about seven or eight semesters there toward my degree on a five-year law degree,” 92-year-old Bailey said. “At that time, I thought I had sufficient quality points there that gave me a good education. After I went into the Air Corps, leaving (the university) early and not coming back to get a degree, I felt I had sufficient time there to deserve a degree.” Bailey went on to earn a Bronze Star for his part in the war, then came to Dothan to become president of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce. University of Alabama Board of Trustees member Davis Malone presented the honorary degree of merit to Bailey. “It was recognized by some of his friends that Selden, when he was at the university, had been called to serve his country, and he just picked up and left when he was called,” Malone said. “He left so quickly that he never did come back to get his degree. He became so busy being successful that he never had a chance to go back to get his degree. The university understood that and the university wanted to be sure he got this honorary degree of merit.”
