Former UA professor chosen as Libya’s new prime minister

A former University of Alabama engineering professor with little political experience is Libya’s new prime minister. Abdurrahim el-Keib, who was educated in the U.S and was a member of the UA faculty from 1985 to 2005, was chosen late Monday by Libya’s National Transitional Council, with 26 of 51 votes. He is to appoint within two weeks a new interim government that will pave the way for the drafting of, a constitution, as well as general elections.

It was a quote that Bharat Balasubramanian brought forward near the end of his lecture at the University of Alabama Monday, but it was a theme that he expressed throughout. “Only he who knows the past can shape the future.” As the vice president of product innovations and process technologies along with group research and advanced engineering, Balasubramanian is one of Daimler Automotive Group’s top executives in charge of product innovations…Mercedes-Benz U.S. International President and CEO Markus Schaefer announced a new doctoral fellowship in partnership with UA that will be awarded to a doctoral candidate who will be assigned a specific project that may be used to enhance the Vance plant’s operations. Andrew Faulkner, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering at UA, was named the first recipient. The fellowship will provide Faulkner with research funding and the opportunity to work at the Vance plant as well as research facilities in Germany.

UA athletics gets Bryant-Denny Stadium ready for big game

Thousands of fans will pour into Tuscaloosa on Saturday, and Alabama athletics are making sure Bryant Denny looks its best. Crews spent the day putting some final touches on Bryant Denny. They were busy power-washing and cleaning. According to the Associate Athletics Director of Communications Doug Walker, crews are preparing to paint the cement on the north end of the stadium to match the off-white “University of Alabama” that sits over the doors. Walker says the painting will start in the next couple of days, and it’s part of routine maintenance. But it will also make the stadium look more formal just in time for the big game. Those changes will be in place, just in time for the first time that a No. 1 and a No. 2 team have met during the regular SEC season.
UA prepares for largest gameday crowd in history

The University of Alabama and the city of Tuscaloosa are taking extra steps to prepare for the big game. And some are even saying the Capstone has never seen a crowd like this before… With less than a week remaining until the battle between LSU and Bama, UA game day operations is busy preparing for record crowds this upcoming weekend. Gina Johnson: We expect about 140,000 people here on campus on game day, probably about 1,700 tents on the quad.

Alabama to present symposium on integration of athletics this week

You might say it takes less than you think to create a campaign and receive 32 awards to prove its success, but the University of Alabama advertising and public relations students may beg to differ, according to a press release. LessThanUThink is a student-generated communications campaign designed to address the nationwide problem of college-age binge-drinking, according to Teri K. Henley, an advertising and public relations instructor and group adviser. “Students produced communications materials, special events and used social media to engage students in the discussion about binge-drinking,” Henley said.
ARDT works with local dance studio for fall show

The essence of “The Nutcracker” and innovative choreography will illuminate the stage of Morgan Auditorium tonight as Alabama Reparatory Dance Theatre presents excerpts from “The Nutcracker,” as well as original choreography from UA dance professors.. . . ARDT also collaborated with The Dance Centre, a local dance studio, for the fall performance. Rita Snyder, associate professor of dance, said The Dance Center asked ARDT to collaborate earlier this year. “The current artistic director and The Dance Center board members thought it would be an interesting project to collaborate with the University,” Snyder said.
