On Alabama Campuses: UA libraries win more respect

Statistics compiled by the Association of Research Libraries show that University of Alabama libraries have risen in the rankings. Since 2003, UA Libraries have moved from 97 to 56 among all criteria for the ARL’s members, which include the top university libraries in the United States and Canada…

University of Alabama announces 2011 homecoming court

University of Alabama announced today five seniors were selected for the 2011 homecoming court in a student election held Tuesday. The following students were voted as members of the court: Erika Baranek, a communication studies major from Gloucester, Va., Coresa Nancy Hogan, a marketing major from Birmingham, Fernanda Lima, an accounting major from Douglasville, Ga., Emily McLaughlin, a nursing major from Montgomery, Mary Talley, an interior design major from Orlando, Fla. The queen will be announced Friday during a pep rally on the UA Quad that will begin at 7 p.m., and will be crowned during halftime at Saturday’s 6 p.m. football game between Alabama and Vanderbilt at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Officials said 8,245 students cast votes online for homecoming court this year, 370 fewer than the number of votes tallied in the 2010 election.

UA grad moves up on Fortune’s list of 50 most powerful women in business

A University of Alabama grad remains one of America’s 50 most powerful women in business, according to Fortune. Marillyn Hewson, executive vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Electronic Systems business area, moved from No. 32 to No. 27 in the magazine’s annual ranking of the 50 most powerful women in business. Hewson earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration and her master’s degree in economics from the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration at UA. She also is a member of the College Board of Visitors…

John Kay and Steppenwolf to lecture, rock out

…Wilk, alongside Steppenwolf front man John Kay, will present a lecture and performance Monday at 7:30 p.m. inside the University’s Moody Music Building Concert Hall. The event is non-ticketed, free and open to the public. The lecture, however, will be a nontraditional one, Wilk said. “We intend to explain who and what we are, play the set, then probably take questions,” he said. “This probably won’t be a lecture in the traditional sense, definitely no PowerPoint presentations. Rock n’ roll doesn’t exactly fit into that category.”…Charles Snead, director of the School of Music, said the band’s performance is an exciting opportunity for the School of Music to present something of high quality that demonstrates their commitment to music. “[John Kay and Steppenwolf’s] performance will show the diverse nature of what we’re all about,” he said. “It gives us the opportunity to showcase a different genre of music and learn from their tremendous amount of experience and expertise.”…

since the University of Alabama held its first official homecoming game in 1920, it has become a celebration rich in tradition, much like the rest of the University. Now, the University is working on its 91st annual homecoming. While some of these traditions have been lost or forgotten, many of them have developed into what is now known as homecoming week each year…

Ambassadors introduce greek life

…The Greek Ambassadors Program is an initiative aimed at getting current UA fraternity and sorority members involved in recruiting the next generation of UA greeks, as well as providing information to students and parents interested in the UA greek community, said Matt Calderone, president of the program…According to the Greek Life page of UA’s website, ambassadors conduct tours and have opportunities throughout the year for personal, professional and leadership development opportunities…
