UA plans memorial for tornado victims

Students and employees of the University of Alabama will gather Aug. 28 for a service that will remember those who died in the April 27 tornado and honor community heroes who responded in the storm’s aftermath. UA spokeswoman Deborah Lane said Wednesday afternoon that the event will held at 7:30 p.m. around Palmer Lake between the Riverside and Lakeside residence halls on the north side of campus. Lane said this will be the first opportunity for the entire UA family to assemble, remember what has been lost, celebrate what has been gained and prepare for the future. “We know that so many of our students went home immediately following the tornado and they were not able to participate in the city’s vigil in June or at the memorial service in between graduation ceremonies (earlier this month),” she said. “This is a chance to come together to reflect on the impact of the tornado in our community, to honor the response of our students and employees in the immediate aftermath of the tornado and to prepare to move forward together.”…
