Google awards UA computer science professor $15,000 grant

University of Alabama associate professor of computer science Jeff Gray was awarded a $15,000 grant by Google this week to fund a computer science program for high school teachers July 25-27, according to the college. UA is one of only two schools in the southeast to receive the honor…UA’s workshop will allow roughly 30 high school teachers learn how to develop Android applications and learn about emerging computer science curricula. The workshop will focus specifically on Scratch and Google’s App Inventor…UA announced that Gray will teach most of the material. Scratch will be taught by an educational team from MIT, who developed the program. The remaining days of the workshop will be spent on Google’s App Inventor.

President answers tweet from UA student

It isn’t every day a regular citizen gets to ask the President of the United States his opinion on the tax code and watch him answer. But Calera native Lane Morrison, a 22-year-old University of Alabama graduate student, had a chance to grill the president…On Wednesday, the popular social networking site in partnership with the White House hosted the first-ever Twitter town hall. The event streamed live on Twitter and the official White House website… “I heard about it on the news, and then this morning on Twitter I saw some people using the hashtag, so I decided to ask my own question,” said Morrison, who is working toward a master’s degree in civil engineering at UA…Morrison’s was one of the 17 tweets selected…

UA holds nutrition and fitness camp

The University of Alabama is fighting against obesity with a nutrition and fitness camp to target our youngsters. Kids will be invited to kick back and watch television, play video games and choose what they want to eat. Researchers will watch them through a see-through mirror to see if viewing habits affect those choices.
