Community Service Center outlines volunteer opportunities

…“Ultimately, this is a long-term process for the city and its volunteers,” said Wahnee Sherman, director of the Community Service Center. “By having people register, it allows the city to be able to go back and say, ‘Now we need someone to go back and do this job,’ for future efforts.”…“Now is a good time for UA students to go and sign up for credentials because there aren’t too many people signing up for them right now,” Sherman said. “Once they sign the paperwork, they’ll be added to a contact list and will be contacted on where volunteers are needed as needs arise. Some students may get something immediately, others may have to wait…

Alabama lawyers offer free guidance for tornado victims in need

UA student’s church in Savannah, Ga. collects relief supplies for Tuscaloosa

The tornado forced the University of Alabama to send students home for the semester, Alexis Roberts was one of them. Back home in Savannah Alexis’church, Second African Baptist, has partnered with other churches to collect relief supplies. Alexis was scheduled to graduate from the University of Alabama this Saturday

Slive: “Words don’t describe” the devastation in Tuscaloosa

The SEC will donate $500,000 to the University of Alabama to assist students, faculty and staff that need help from the April 27 tornado in Tuscaloosa. “I’ve heard a lot of people say words don’t describe what happened, and words don’t describe it,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, who visited Tuscaloosa on Sunday. “The devastation is so complete that in a sense it’s mind-numbing. You keep seeing it and it’s almost as if your eyes are trying to send a message to your mind that this is really what you’re seeing.” SEC athletics directors recommended the donation this week and it was approved by the presidents and chancellors…Slive got a tour by Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore of some of the hardest-hit areas in Tuscaloosa and left overwhelmed by the generosity of volunteers. “I was so struck by the number of people that were helping,” Slive said. “Everywhere you turned, you saw medical people, you saw clothing, you saw water, you saw food, you saw power trucks from Michigan and Georgia…

Saban: Tornado “most devastating thing I’ve seen” and warns Tide fans rebuilding will take time

Nick Saban met with diehard University of Alabama fans Thursday night, not so much to talk football as much as give thanks. Saban addressed the Crimson Caravan at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center on U.S. 280. But his message centered on the outpouring of help and concern shown since the devastating tornadoes that tore through Tuscaloosa and other parts of the state April 27. “The message is an appreciation for what every one has done,” Saban said before the event…Saban, who weathered hurricanes during his tenures as head coach of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and SEC rival LSU, said those storms paled compared to what he witnessed nine days ago.  “It’s the most devastating thing I’ve seen in my life,” he said…Saban said the athletics department has set up a medical center for athletes affected by the storm, especially with the psychological aftermath. He noted that so many lives were disrupted; the move is necessary “so they can get the help they need.”
