UA to honor WWII veterans who played for the Tide
Tuscaloosa News – Nov. 13
A group of former University of Alabama football players who served in World War II will be honored just before tonight’s kickoff in celebration of their achievements both on and off the field. Such achievements have been brought to light in the recently released book, “When Wining Was Everything,” by author Delbert Reed, a former Tuscaloosa News sports editor. According to a news release, the book focuses on the individual war-time experiences of about 60 of the more than 325 UA football players and coaches who served in World War II, to illustrate the service and sacrifice of all the men on all battlefronts of the war. On Friday, 13 of those veterans gathered at Paul W. Bryant Museum to celebrate the book’s release as well as to sign copies for family members and others at the museum…

Rants and Raves: University site fitting tribute
Montgomery Advertiser – Nov. 13
RAVE: For the dedication of the Autherine Lucy Clock Tower and the Malone-Hood Plaza on the University of Alabama campus. The site at Foster Auditorium was the backdrop to former Gov. George Wallace’s “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door” in 1963. It now honors the university’s first black students. Autherine Lucy Foster was the first black student to be accepted and enrolled at UA, albeit amid venomous protests. The enrollment of James Hood and the late Vivian Malone Jones several years later marked the official end of segregation at the university. Lucy initially stayed only three days in 1956 before the university expelled her, ostensibly over safety concerns. She returned to UA more than three decades later and earned a master’s degree in 1992. Jones and Hood enrolled in 1963, and Jones became the university’s first black graduate in 1965. Hood transferred from UA in 1963, but returned and earned a doctorate in 1997. Their courage in the face of bigotry and hatred is well worth honoring in this way.
